Little Big Planet - Story Mode

Really amazing game.. The story mode is lots of fun and really well done.

It's had plenty of time for user generated content and so I had a little browse through that. You can see what levels your friends have played and liked and it's a really good way of finding some fun stuff.

One level, a re-imagining of Jack and the Beanstalk was awesome with a giant beanstalk and a giants castle and a chase and a golden egg and everything.. It must of taken hours.

It ain't over until..

Here's a quick round up of games I still have too finish.

I've completed the last mission on Ninja Blade upto the last boss battle. It's a bit of tough one even compared to some of the earlier ones.. Plus with out saveable checkpoints the whole thing needs to be done in one sitting.. I still have hopes of completing this though because I really did enjoy the game.

I ground too a halt on Little Big Planet's story mode on the last but one world.. The five lives per checkpoint get a bit annoying on some of the tougher sections. On this particular bit there's a series of circles rotating within each other and I couldn't seem to time the jumps for the last section. I'm sure a bit of practice would see me through but I just don't have the patience at the moment.

FUEL's career mode is probably about half way completed.. My excuse here is that I've been obsessed with the Silent Hill boxset. I must really polish this one off before the glut of racing games arrive later in the year.

Assassin's Creed is also a last mission boss battle waiting too happen. I don't think there's any spoilers here by saying the last bit is a pitched battle and I got annoyed with it. However a friend on a forum has given me a few hints for completing it and with the sequel on it's way this is one game I should really polish off too.

First Look: Little Big Planet

Having been excited about this for months it was perhaps a little strange that not only did I not rush out and buy it I actually didn't even play it for ages after it arrived.

However I finally got around to slotting the disc into the slot (Aren't trays just so last-gen?) and giving it a whirl. Having cast an eye over the last few games I completed there's a lot gritty action so Little Big Planet comes as a breath of fresh air. From the minute Stephen Frys dulcet tones ease you into the tutorial to the brilliantly realised combination of graphics and physics that make the Little Big Planet itself what it is it's fantastic fun.

It's very easy to get in to and start playing. Obviously the main draw of the Story mode is to collect all the pieces you need for creating stuff. But even for someone like me whose not interested in creation (although I was fascinated to see what other people had made) it's a compelling draw to try and find all the stuff and 100% a level. (Sadly I've only managed this on the opening level despite some replays). It's also full of imagination and charm and it's a lot of fun to play.. Sackboy is a bit loose but he's made of sack, What do you expect? He's also got a consistant physical weight and you're soon wondering why 2d platformers went away in the first place (of course the reason being that ones that are this much fun to play are few and far between.. This is the best one since Super Mario World in my opinion.) It has a similar sort of inventiveness and character.

The crux of the matter for me though is that the Story mode is a delight. To give you an idea one set of levels features a Tim Burton-esque gothic wedding and the grooms gone runabout. Beats the usual fire, ice, desert levels does it not? There's a moment a few levels in where you presented with a jetpack and there's a puzzle where you have to lift weights into a large bucket to open a door...At once you're reminded of Half Life 2 and the seminal Thrust and you think ... why can't all games be this much fun?

Happy New Year Gaming Round Up!

Happy New Year 2009 to everyone!

So there's not been a huge amount of gaming so far. Little Big Planet happily arrived. Sadly still no stock of Dualshock 3s in town or indeed at Shopto.Net. However today I decided to go to Ramsey and visit the Islands only independent game retailer and see if he had one. Sadly not. Huge amounts of 360 stock but virtually nothing for PS3. Happily he did offer to sell me his own ex-demo genuine Sixaxis for £20. It seemed reasonable for a second controller and to get me back in the PS3 gaming loop (I only have two days holiday left after all), So I'll pre-order a Dualshock from Shopto and keep this one as a handy second/spare pad.

I'm struggling to like Banjo & Kazooie. More about this in it's own post.

Went to a New Years Eve party and, I suppose some what predictably, the 'just received for Christmas' Wii was brought out. I got to play Sonic and Mario at the Olypmics which I hadn't played before, but I suppose ironically, all the non-gamers had and Mario Kart Wii as well.

Sonic and Mario at the Olypmics isn't great. I found a lot of the events boring and over complicated but everyone else seemed to enjoy it despite the slow pace, the constant need to plug in and then remove the Nunchuck and the 'relatively' complicated controls.

Mario Kart Wii, at least in multiplayer, has lost none of the old magic and I would've bought that today (to get some much needed practice in) but the local independant didn't actually have it in stock.

A look ahead to Quarter 4 - Part 4

So having broken down the purchase choices into three well thought out list it's not actually working out to plan.

We started off so well.. Bought Saints Row 2 as advertised and completed it the same week (give or take a day). But that's when things started to fall apart. Little Big Planet was delayed... and while it's still on my list it's now moved down to the second, cheap in the new year list, because I'm just not going to have the time to dedicate it too at the moment. Then I got all excited about Fallout 3 and bought it despite it being on list two..

Now I've cancelled my pre-order for Banjo & Kazooie because Eurogamer only gave it 7 and so now I'll have to see what EDGE give it. As I said I'm not a rabid Rare fan and was only excited about it cos it seemed like it was going to be brilliant and it seems it just isn't. So I've rushed out today and bought Gears of War 2. Cos.. well everyones playing it and I don't want to miss out on all the possible multi-player, co-op fun. I know.. Very shallow.

So what have we learnt? Lists are for geeks..

A look ahead to Quarter 4

Anyone whose been keeping an eye on the games market will know that the coming next couple of months are when all the publishers release their big hitters in search of our christmas cash. Even by regular standards I think we can safely say it's a bit packed. Last year I bought nearly everything I wanted on release and rushed through them ready for the next.. This year it's too packed too even attempt that so, for your reading pleasure, I've divided them into three lists..

1, Purchase on Release

These are the one's I'll either be pre-ordering or picking up at my local game emporium.

SAINTS ROW 2

The first to blink and out of the traps on Friday. I didn't play the first game and I'm not overly keen on the bling/wanna be gangster angle. However, I'm liking the look of the gameplay. It seems to have more of the scope of San Andreas as opposed to the slightly disappointing, for me anyway, realistic nature of GTA:IV. The co-op angle also sounds fun.

LITTLE BIG PLANET

Obviously I've been following this with interest for many months. Is it going to turn around PS3's fortunes? I don't think so (but that's probably a topic for another post). Is it going to be huge amounts of 2D platforming fun? Certainly looks that way with all the reviews and previews complimenting the content on the disc. Will I be making anything myself? Probably not. Mostly I'm looking forward to seeing the imaginitive content that I think the great unwashed (Yes you at the back!) come up with.. Hopefully there'll be plenty of life in it.

BANJO & KAZOOIE: Nuts & Bolts

Never played a B&K game before but I love 3d platformers and this looks like Rare have finally made something I'm interested in. The chance to construct vehicles and perform challenges is an original concept. I'm also going to pre-order this from Play to get the download code for the original game. With the way our postie delivers it probably wont arrive for a few days after release leaving room nicely for..

MIRRORS EDGE

In a sequel packed release schedule it's another new IP that makes the essential purchase list for me. Not only did I win a Mirrors Edge T shirt but I've been following it with interest. I love the clean fresh look of the game and I really hope it pulls off the feat of making a fast free moving action game.

TOMB RAIDER: UNDERWORLD

Loved (and I mean totally *hearted*) the PS one games. The Crystal Dynamics games have been going in the right direction but this one really looks live they've captured the magic of the early games.. Looking forward to getting lost for hours in huge levels and complex puzzles. Oh and staring at that lovingly recreated Croft ass.

PRINCE OF PERSIA

Another sequel but with it being a re-imagining of the franchise I'm hoping for something more intune with Sands of Time with the joy of movement and being amazed at what you can do with the Prince rather than the sort of Emo Prince of the latter sequels..

So that's the six essential pre-christmas purchases.. Stay tuned for the next two lists

Great Expectations

There's been a fair bit written about Little Big Planet . From EDGE to Eurogamer most recently and plenty in OPM on many occasions. It's starting to look very promising. Obviously the content creation has received a great deal of attention. I'm not a particularly creative person (if you couldn't tell from my awesome blog writing ability) but I am looking forward to being able to sample the stuff generated by people who are... And judging by the amount of time spent by some people decorating cars in Forza 2 there's plenty of people with the time and the talent (and the lack of sex life most probably) to make it very rewarding and extend it's life, possibly, for a long while.
