Is PS3 the new Gamecube?

Let's look at the evidence

  1. It's a distant third place in terms of harware sales.
  2. First Party titles seem to be the only ones able to exploit the power of the machine
  3. Constant price cuts and bundles
  4. Third Party developers shipping either shoddy/late conversions or deciding not to support the machine at all
  5. PAL users treated with disdain (See PSN and Dualshock 3 unavailable until '08)
  6. Also available in purple
Well maybe not available in purple but you get the picture.

There's no doubt that Sony has handled the PS3 extremely poorly but I think things are starting to look up.

The machine has outsold the Wii in Japan for two weeks in a row, which means that the Japanese are starting to take to the machine. It's already sold three times as many units as the X360 over there.

It's arguable if it will reach X360's total but on the other hand I think the PS3 has sturdier legs than MS's machine. Countering that though is the difficulty of programming the PS3 and the fact that EA is now completely dominant, which means so many key multiformat titles will lead on X360.

The UK/Euro PSN isn't much of problem in my eyes. It's not as if Sony has blocked access to the Japan and US stores. Still, there's no reason why demo releases can't be universal. Even the US hasn't got the DualShock 3 so UK owners aren't the only ones missing out.

It all remains to be seen as to whether or not it will all pan out for Sony. The most serious problem at least for dual machine owners is that PS3 multiformat releases are simply not good enough. The big test will be Burnout Paradise which is leading on PS3.

One area where the PS3 doesn't match the Gamecube is that it's not profitable - Nintendo always makes money on its hardware.
